But this indicator light is the visible part of a larger pressure monitoring system, and it’s there to help. When it’s on, it’s telling you that your tires need air.
The various tire pressure monitoring systems used by auto makers are designed to monitor the air pressure in a car’s tires. The idea behind a TPMS is primarily safety-related — underinflated tires offer a less stable ride, and they’re more prone to possible blowouts. By calling attention to an “underinflation event,” the system can prompt the driver to inflate the tire to the proper levels.
Sensors within the tire, or on the car, send information to one or several modules in the car. These modules are programmed with a range of acceptable circumstances. For direct tire pressure monitoring, this is often between 28 and 35 pounds per square inch of air in the tire.

ITPMS systems have the advantage of using existing equipment on cars . The changes are software only and do not require additional equipment. On the other hand, at iTPMS, the tire air pressure is approximate, it is not directly measured.

Based on the rate of revolution of each wheel, the computer can interpret the relative size of the tires on your vehicle. When a wheel starts spinning faster than expected, the computer calculates that the tire is underinflated and alert the driver accordingly.
So, an indirect tire pressure monitoring system doesnât actually measure tire pressure. Itâs not electronically processing the same kind of measurement you might see with a tire gauge. Instead, an indirect tire pressure monitor simply measures how fast your tires are rotating and sends signals to the computer that will actuate the indicator light when something in the rotation seems amiss.
