Tesla Model Y Tire Pressure

How To Check Your Tesla Model Y Tire Pressure

HOW TO RESET TIRE PRESSURE ICON 2022 TESLA MODEL Y

Checking regularly all tires on your Tesla Model Y, including your spare tire, once a month or before a long trip is recommended. Tires have been known to lose up to 1psi every month.

  • Purchase a trusted tire pressure gauge.
  • If possible check the pressure on your tires cold before youve driven or at least three hours after youve driven.
  • Insert tire pressure gauge into the valve stem on your tire. When you hear a psst sound thats air escaping the tire.
  • Compare the measured psi to the psi found on the sticker inside the drivers door of your vehicle, in the Tesla owners manual or sometimes Inside the fuel cap. DO NOT compare to the psi on your tires sidewall.
  • If your psi is above the number, let air out until it matches. If below, add air until it reaches the proper number.
  • Over inflated and under inflated tires suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be changed more often. Vehicles with under-inflated tires have increased rolling resistance that requires more fuel to maintain the same speed.

    Recommended Tire Pressure For Tesla

Your tire pressure is one of the first things you should consistently prioritize when maintaining your Tesla. Without the proper tire pressure, your tires may not be balanced and can put your safety at risk.

Typically, your tires should be between 40 and 45 PSI, depending on the configuration of your electric vehicle. Ensuring your Tesla has the right pressure goes beyond meeting the PSI requirement. In this post, we look at how to check that you have the right tire pressure and the best practices to maintain your Tesla tires for the short and long term. How Can You Check And Adjust Tesla Model S Tire Pressure

When your tires are cold, and your Tesla Model S has been stationary for more than three hours, you need to refer to your Tire and Loading Information label to know what you should be looking for.

Then remove the valve cap and firmly press an accurate tire pressure gauge onto your valve to measure the tire pressure. You can remove or add air to reach the targeted pressure.

Once finished, reinstall the valve cap to keep out dirt. Examine the valve to detect if any leaks or damage have occurred. This process is the same for all models.

How Do You Properly Maintain Your Tire Pressure

To keep the required PSI for the optimal operation of your vehicle, you must do one of two things:

  • Find the proper tire pressure information by following the instructions in this blog to find your Service details.
  • You must read the Loading Information label on the front passenger center door pillar.
  • Even if the tire pressure information on the tire itself is different from what you find in either of the above options, you must follow the Service details or the Loading Information. â

Whether for Tesla Model S tire pressure or any other Tesla, keep an eye on the Tire Pressure Indicator light on your touchscreen. The light doesnât immediately disappear once you adjust your tire pressure. Once you have inflated your tires to the correct pressure, you must drive more than 15 miles per hour for a short time to properly activate the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. After taking the short drive, the indicator light will go off. Should the indicator light flash for longer than a minute on your Tesla, it indicates a system malfunction.

The Consequences Of Driving With Deflated Tires On Tesla Model Y:

The repercussions turn out to be numerous. First drive with flat tires will reduce grip of your car on the road so increases braking distance et reduces handling on corners.

After that there are also environmental impact because a car with deflated tires will consume more. So it will cost you more in gasoline but also it will pollute the air by a amplification of fine particle emissions.

Finally, this will also have the consequence damage the tires much faster of your Tesla Model Y. So you will have to change them more often.

    What You Need To Do

Firstly, know what the correct tyre pressures are for you car. These can be found on the door shut of your car, sometimes shown as bar and sometiems as psi. Most Teslas require between 42 and 45psi to give a guide as the number to look for.

When you first start driving and the tyres are cold then adjust the tyre pressures at the first opportunity. The tyre pressures WILL warm up while the car is being driven so it is important to do this step before the tyres have had chance to warm through.

Ideally the pressures should be adjusted when the tyres are cold but in practice this cab be hard to do. An alternative is if the tyres are, say, 2psi below where they should be when they are cold, when you stop to inflate them increase the pressure by 2psi on whatever they are reading. ie if the tyres are now reading 46psi when warm, they should be inflated to 48psi even if the target pressure is 45psi when cold. It’s not perfect, but it is a pragmatic approach. Check your tyres again when cold to see if the adjustment has worked correctly.

    Tire Pressure Vs Efficiency Data/chart

phluppsen said:Personally, I experience a noticable difference. An electric car is 3 times more efficient than a comparable ICE car. A change in tire pressure that equates to a 2% efficiency increase in an ICE car would have a 6% efficiency increase in an electric car, with all else being equal. The fact, that electric cars are usually heavier than ICE cars would make the difference even greater.Every absolute change in efficiency is a much greater relative change the more efficient the car already is. That is why there is such a big focus on aero, drivetrain and tires with electric cars. Take a sip from an espresso and it is half empty, take a sip from a gallon of milk and you won’t even notice.

Checking When Your Tires Are Cold

If you read the print on your tires youll likely see a cold fill in front of the recommended PSI. Checking your tire pressure cold merely means a check when the vehicle has not been driving, typically for at least 3 hours. Its not related to the temperature outside. You should always check your pressure cold. The same is true when filling since youll need to get a new pressure measurement.

Driving just one mile can warm up the tire enough to affect the pressure.

Under Pressure: Why Your Teslas Tire Pressure Matters

Teslas have a bit of a reputation for wearing through tires quickly. With the instant torque available to them, Teslas can grind through their rubber at an astonishing rate if not properly maintained.

Underinflation is the most common maintenance cause of tire failure in Teslas. Underinflation causes tires to overheat, which increases cracking, tread separation, and the possibility of blowouts. Underinflation can also increase braking distance and reduce steering response, subsequently reducing your control in dangerous situations. The same actually goes for overinflation, since an overinflated tire has less surface area for grip when stopping and steering.

An underinflated tire could also affect your range. An NHSTA study suggests that low tire pressure can reduce your driving range by around 0.3% for every 1% reduction in tire pressure. For example, lets assume were running a 2019 Model 3, which has a range of about 264 miles at the recommended 42 psi. If you let the tires lose just 5% of that pressure , you might reduce your range by about 1.5%, or about 4 miles. Not a huge loss, but it would add up over time and would increase the longer you went without properly inflating your tires.

    Tesla Tire Pressure Explained Model S 3 X Y

When youre getting ready to drive a Tesla, proper tire pressure probably isnt the first thing on your mind. But it can get to the top of your mental list pretty quickly if your low pressure indicator turns on or a tire blows out.

Electric vehicles have some extra tire requirements thanks to the added battery pack weight and the increased amount of torque the tires experience on a regular basis. For Teslas, maintaining your wheels and preventing blowouts is essential to protecting yourself, your passengers, and, of course, your investment in a Tesla. After all, a Tesla is only worth the investment if its still rolling.

In this installment of our series Tesla Features Explained, were going to talk about why tire pressure is an important part of Tesla maintenance, how to check your Teslas tire pressure, and how to make tire pressure checks a habit.

    Uniform Tire Quality Grading

The following information relates to the tire grading system developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , which grades tires by tread wear, traction and temperature performance. Tires that have deep tread, and winter tires, are exempt from these marking requirements.

Where applicable, quality grades are found on the tires sidewall between the tread shoulder and maximum section width. For example:

The quality grades are described next.

    Treadwear

The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course.

For example, a tire graded 150 wears one and a half times better on a government test course than a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends on the actual conditions of their use, however, and can depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices, road characteristics, and climate.

    Traction

The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are: AA, A, B, and C. These grades represent a tires ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C might have poor traction performance.

The Risks Of Driving With Deflated Tires On Tesla Model Y:

Given the consequences of driving with under-inflated tires with your Tesla Model Y this will involve various risks. Indeed driving with deflated tires increases the risks of doing aquaplaning, and also amplifies the risks accidents caused by longer braking distance. Eventually, early tire wear can lead to tire blowout especially on the highway when driving at high speed. And this will lead to loss of control and possibly a dramatic accident.

To conclude: It is important to properly maintain the tires of a Tesla Model Y first of all to guarantee your safety and then the fuel consumption. And it goes through a monthly pressure check tires and also before long trips or when you are loaded.

How Do You Reset The Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Resetting the TPMS sensor requires you to use the touchscreen.

The built-in TPMS feature can only function when your Tesla is running. When turning on the touchscreen on your Tesla, you must select the Controls option before pressing Settings, which then takes you to the Tire Pressure Monitor section. In the latter section, select Reset Sensors. Depending on the size of your Tesla wheels, you should reset the TPMS sensors differently.

Selecting the wrong wheel size can trigger false tire pressure warnings. Anytime a tire pressure warning is displayed after selecting the wrong size, get out of the vehicle as quickly as possible, close all doors and the trunk of your Tesla and wait for your touchscreen to go black.

Once you have done the above-mentioned things, you can re-enter your Tesla and make sure that the correct size is selected before you press the Reset button on the touchscreen.

Never reset your TPMS sensors to attempt clearing Tesla tire pressure warnings.

    Reset Tesla Tpms Sensor

If you change the wheels or the low tire pressure does not reset after the pressure has been corrected, it is possible to carry out the TPMS sensor reset.

  • Add air to all the tires and use an external tire gauge to ensure all tires are at the recommended pressure.
  • Enter the vehicle and turn the screen on.
  • Select Controls, then go to- Settings
  • Service & Reset
  • Drive the vehicle for a few minutes to reset the tire pressure values.
  • You are not supposed to carry out TPMS reset to clear low-pressure tire warnings. Use this option as a last resort and use a tire gauge to ensure tire pressure is correct in all the tires.

Cold Temperature Causing Low Tire Pressure Alarm In Tesla

Tesla introduces the new Model Y 20" winter wheels and tire package ...

The cold air causes the air to contract. If you live in an environment where temperatures plunge below freezing, then you will likely see this have some effect on your Tesla tires.

Most of the time, pressure alarms caused by colder weather will self-correct once you start driving your car however, if your tire pressure was already on the low side, then you could see a loss in your tire traction.

The fix: The first idea is to store your Tesla in a climate-controlled garage. Not only will this help with your tire pressure, but it will also keep you comfortable as you get in your car on a chilly morning. However, if you cant control the Tesla in a warm space, there are other options.

You can also increase your tire pressure to a cold-weather level. Keeping an emergency battery box with tire inflator in your sub-trunk is a lifesaver on this one. This is usually just keeping them on the higher side of their standard PSI. You want to avoid exceeding your vehicles maximum recommended tire pressure.

Consult the owners manual for your model to find the cold weather tire pressure. You can also contact your Tesla dealer for more questions regarding maximum tire pressures.
