Do Nitto Ridge Grapplers Last Long

Nitto Ridge Grappler Review Long Term Review | Are They Really THAT Good??

For mostly on-road use, the Ridge Grappler should provide excellent tread life of 40,000 to 50,000 miles, although if you intend to use them off-road even more than occasionally, tread life should drop off from there. A solid option, you get what you pay for and the Nitto Ridge Grappler is not cheap.

Nitto Ridge Grappler Overview

Its advertised as one of the best tires in terms of off-road performance, wet and try traction, fuel efficiency, snow outfield capabilities, and tread life. Its designed to be good enough no matter how bad the weather gets, or how rough the off-road tracks get.

What makes the Ridge Grappler such a huge success within the off-road segment is its hybrid approach and competitive pricing. Its designed to have all of the best qualities of both mud- and all-terrain tires, but without the drawbacks. Its a compelling buy within its category offering all-weather, all-season off-road performance at an affordable price point.

It even gets style points thanks to its rugged appearance and bulky design. The tread pattern looks aggressive with large tread blocks that make the tires off-road capabilities obvious at first glance. Its aesthetically and practically perfect for light trucks and heavy diesel off-roaders!

If you own a truck or SUV and you are looking for a hybrid tire that combines all the impressive features of an all-terrain tire and a mud-terrain tire, then the Nitto Ridge Grappler will be a great choice.

And while it may be pricier than most of the other tires in its class, its superior all-season performance, comfortable and refined on-road ride, sturdy construction and remarkable off-road performance means you will get value for your money.

Overview Of Nitto Ridge Grappler

The Nitto Ridge Grappler performs exceptionally than every other tire you could find available in the market in terms of mileage, wet traction, dry handling, off-road performance, and many more. It boasts of excellent steering handling, and it is tranquil whenever it is in motion.

Due to the tires build-up, it doesnt wear out quickly, unlike others, and it doesnt get hot even if you have to dry all through the day. It thus fulfills all demands and requirements needed for it to be called a versatile all-season tire.

Most drivers see it as a significant investment to buy the tire because it saves them the stress and money of changing tires for each climate change. If you need an all-weather performance tire with a rugged style to handle all the dirty work for you, this tire is your best companion.

It’s The Best Of Both Worlds

For starters, it refuses to be just an all-terrain or just a mud-terrain tire. In fact, its really a smart mix of both. This hybrid tire concept isnt necessarily something new in the tire market, but its something rarely executed perfectly. Creating a tire that has the low road noise and excellent on-road handling of the Terra Grappler G2, while making it shine in extreme off-road conditions like the Trail Grappler is a big ask.

Which Is Better: Nitto Ridge Grappler Or Nitto Terra Grappler G2

I guess the right question should be: how much better is the Nitto Ridge Grappler than the Terra Grappler G2? The answer is simple. The Ridge Grappler is better in all aspects than the Terra Grappler G2, and this is not a bad thing.

Think of it this way: The Ridge Grappler will keep going when the Terra Grappler G2 is hustling for grip. But the Ridge Grappler is not the ultimate off-road tire in Nittos lineup. That distinction belongs to the Trail Grappler and Mud Grappler. But still, the Ridge Grappler offers better off-road and all-weather abilities than the Terra Grappler G2.

But its not only better in off-road driving. The Nitto Trail Grappler is also quieter and more comfortable like a comparable highway terrain tire. Thats saying a lot for a rugged tire that is primarily designed for off-road driving.

Is Nitto Ridge Grappler A Good Tire

After youve had your fun off-road, the Ridge Grappler is ready to carry you home. When you hit the highway youll appreciate the smooth, quiet ride on the road. The Ridge Grappler offers the best of both worlds for off-road and on-road performance compared to more aggressive mud, sand or snow tire options.

Should I Buy The Nitto Ridge Grappler

The Nitto Ridge Grappler is a great tire for overlanders and campers it provides excellent off-road traction, regardless of the surface, and feels very sturdy, meaning youll definitely not get stranded anywhere.

However, Id still be cautious on public roads, as the overall traction on dry and wet roads is lower than the class average.

If you care about those things , the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 will be a much better option, albeit for a slight off-road traction penalty.

Nitto Ridge Grappler Dry And Wet Performance

As noted earlier, the Nitto Ridge Grappler is a hybrid tire. It merges the qualities of 3 different types of tires into one.

It combines the qualities of an all-terrain tire, a mud-terrain tire and an all-season high-performance tire.

So, whenever you are driving on the streets with this tire, it will supply outstanding grip and traction on both wet and dry roads.

And besides its dependable traction and solid braking, this Nitto hybrid tire also delivers decent handling on dry and wet roads.

How Does It Perform On Wet And Slippery Surfaces

The tire does perform exceptionally on wet and slippery surfaces. It comes with an excellent tread design and pattern that ensures you get the right amount of grip and traction to stay stable on roads during acceleration and braking.

The biting edge, the deep tread, and the pattern are responsible for the balance you get with the tire whenever you drive your car on any slippery surfaces or road.

Road noise is also something that Nitto tackles in their tire models. Their technology aids in improving dynamic contact points in the tires while driving by successfully identifying and counteracting undesirable tire responses in different terrains.

This is one of the features that some premium tires dont have. It is the part of the tire that makes it unique and distinct from others. No one will ever want to trade a tire that offers lots of benefits and quiet with any other tire.

Either you are moving slowly or running at high speed, the tire doesnt make too much noise. The tread handles different surfaces with style and ensures you have the best quiet riding experience always.

What Are The Specifications And Maintenance Indicators

The Nitto Ridge Grappler is a hybrid all-terrain/mud-terrain tire designed to provide owners with advanced off-road traction and usable on-road grip and stability.

One of the best things about it is that it comes in many, many sizes 80 to be exact! Yup, thats a huge number. You can even find load range E and load range F models, unlike many of the competitors.

Hence, the Ridge Grappler is a tire that will fit most SUVsand trucks driving on public roads today.

These include mid-size SUVs and trucks, like the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, Ford Bronco and Raptor, and Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma it also covers full-size trucks, like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Toyota Tundra, and even heavy-duty trucks, like the Ford F-250, Ram 2500, and Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.

In other words youll undoubtedly find a suitable size for your SUV or truck.

As for maintenance indicators, Nitto employed the industry-standard TWIs .

It wouldve been great if the tiremaker included its Visible Treadwear Indicators, but I guess it reserved those only for its touring tires.

Anyway, the TWIs can show you when you need to replace the tires in the case of the Ridge Grappler, thats when the tread reaches 2/32-inch of depth.

The reason why you need to replace your tires at that point is that they wont be able to provide you with meaningful traction in rainy conditions. Its also illegal to drive with such tires in most places.

Initial Impressions & Review

The beauty of living in the Midwest is that, in the last month alone, Ive run these tires on pavement, in snow, in mud, on rocks and in the rain. If I had to do this performance review in one word, it would beImpressive.

Pavement

The tires on-road perform as you would expect. I ran my E rated tires at 40 psi and they felt planted but not overly stiff.

The road noise is minimal at best and I found myself hearing more wind noise from my roof rack and solar panel than tire noise from the Ridge Grapplers.

Snow

Ive been pleasantly surprised by how well these tires have done in the snow. Driving around town on wet, sometimes packed snow, at a full 40 PSI they did great. Just as good if not better than other A/T tires Ive run in the past.

Aired down on the trail, they did really well. The deep, aggressive tread design did a great job navigating the fresh snow and I didnt get stuck once.

Mud

These tires were designed for the mud.

They took the wet, muddy trails of South Dakota without breaking a sweat.

Rocks

I havent been able to test these new tires on as many rock surfaces as I would like, but lucky for you guys, my last set of tires were also Ridge Grapplers. Happy to report they did just fine.

Aired down to around 15 PSI, the aggressive sidewall and shoulder lugs grip onto every rock surface they come into contact with.

Rain

For a hybrid tire, these do a great job at siphoning water away from the tire to maintain tread contact with the road.

Performance Recap

Design Of Nitto Ridge Grappler

Nitto Ridge Grappler 217130 Tires

The good side of the tire is that it comes with a great design which makes it deliver the best driving experience needed for any outing. The tires design and construction make it command quiet variable pitch tread, staggered shoulder lugs, stone ejectors, steep block edges, and alternating shoulder grooves. Aside from the features listed above, the tire has a dual sidewall that significantly increases the tires durability. It has excellent block formation that is well reinforced to protect the tires tread whenever you are carrying heavy loads.

Is It Good For Winter

Any tire with such an aggressive tread pattern will naturally provide more snow traction however, just like with wet pavement, the tread compound is very important in providing better snow traction.

In this case, the all-season rubber compound should stay soft and pliable in freezing temperatures, or the tire will simply start performing like plastic.

Fortunately, the Ridge Grappler is pretty good on unpacked snow, providing good traction and handling and short-ish stopping distances.

It struggles a bit with packed snow, but thats normal for the category, and ice traction is abysmal. There is a reason why a set of winter tires is the best choice for snow and ice, after all.

Nitto will also cover mounting and balancing charges while the buyer will be responsible for applicable charges and other related costs.

Non-Uniformity Issues

If your Ridge Grappler tire is removed from service due to non-uniformity issue, then Nitto will also replace it free of charge.

For the tire to be eligible for free replacement, it shouldnât be worn by more than 25% of its original usable tread. If the tread is worn by more than 25%, then the replacement will be done on a prorated basis.
