What Is The Best Fat Tire Electric Bike
The RadRover 6 Plus Electric Fat Bike offers a blend of performance, quality construction and value, making it one of the best fat tire e-bikes for riders of all levels.
Equipped with a powerful 750-watt geared hub motor, even steep inclines don’t phase this powerful fat bike. A custom spring fork with lockout and preload adjustment cushions rides on various surfaces.
If you’re not ready to splurge on a premium bike, we highly recommend a more affordable fat tire electric bike, the Ecotric fat tire electric bike. The no-frills bike has everything you need and nothing you don’t .
Want to charge your phone as you ride? Consider a bike with a built-in USB charging port. Commuters and city riders may prefer a bike frame that folds flat for easier storage. Wondering how to transport such a big bike? We’ve got you covered with these best bike racks for heavy e-bikes.
While most fat tire e-bikes have multiple speeds, you’ll want to have enough gear selection if you’re a heavier rider, or if you plan on taking the bike off-road. Some bikes have a twist throttle, which instantly boosts power so that you can go that much faster.
Many of the best fat tire electric bikes offer three modes: full electric, pedal-assist and manual. Other considerations include the maximum speed and battery range, and whether the fat tire electric bike and its battery pack are weather-resistant if you can’t avoid riding in inclement weather.
Nakto Folding Ox Review: Hill Test
In my time speaking with people about what appeals to them about e-bikes Id wager I hear more about how e-bikes can help on hills quoted more than any other aspect they bring to the table. That makes a lot of sense for many people bikes transition from fun to work once a few degrees of incline get in your way.
So how does the Nakto Folding OX fair on hills? It does well but to a point.
From the two hill tests that I conducted on the Folding OX to better see how a 500W, 52Nm motor could scale a hillside I thought it did great until it cut out.
The throttle-only test looked like it would make it to the top of our 1/3 mile, 12% grade test hill as it was holding decent speed into the second of the two steep pitches. However, motor power suddenly cut out on me forcing me to put a foot down.
Even on the PAS test, which I technically completed up to our segment point, the motor shut off shortly after finishing that test too.
Now, I cant for sure say what occurred, so keep in mind that the following is an educated guess, but either the motor or the controller is able to shut down motor assistance in the event the motor starts running too hot. Considering it was giving full juice to a 230 lbs rider attempting to summit a steeper than most hill, it makes sense to me that the motor may have been running hot.
When kept to normal riding conditions I think itll do fine, just know that it has limits if you are trying to tackle particularly steep roads on the regular.
Bicyclings Experts Answer Your Most Commonly Asked Questions About Electric Bikes
FAQ:What are some of the biggest differences between a bike with a 250-watt motor and a 500W or 750W motor? How much power do you really need?
Bicycling: This is a more complicated question than it seems. Our expert panel is mixed on what motor wattage can mean for your ride. Bicyclings Test Editor, Dan Chabonov, says it depends on the terrain and how many gears the bike has. You could get away with a 250W motor somewhere flat, though a fat-tire e-bike will likely be heavy enough that it will still struggle to get going, he says. For a fat e-bike, 400W to 500W should ensure a good user experienceand if you live on a hill, get the most powerful motor you can afford.
FAQ: Where and when can I legally ride an e-bike that goes over 20mph?
FAQ: Can you get an e-bike repaired at a regular bike shop?
Bicycling: On this, Chabanov, Phillips, and Seplavy agree that it depends on the shop. Some places dont have a repair stand that can sustain the weight of some e-bikes, but most should be able to do normal bike repairs, like gear adjustments and flat fixes, says Chabonov.
Phillips adds that its best to check in with the motor manufacturer or the bike brand to see what shops are certified to work on their equipment.
FAQ: How many miles can you usually get on a single battery charge? And where can I charge my e-bike?

Featured Customer & Media Reviews
Space inside the RV, especially when youre on the road, is limited. Getting a full-size bike inside is pretty cumbersome, but with the RadMini, you can put it almost anywhere.
Anthony Nalli, Executive Producer of the RVers and outdoor enthusiast
enjoy taking our bikes out while camping. It’s been so much fun and we are seeing lots of sites we typically would not have seen. Highly recommend these bikes.
The Mini is a bike that you’ll keep finding a use for. A hunter getting into their spot and wanting something easy to conceal once they get there. An apartment dweller that is limited on space, but wants an ebike. RV or van-lifers that need an easy way to get around the campsite. Anyone that is interested in an ebike but is limited on space.
I have had the RadMini for a month now and put 160 miles on it. It is so cool to ride around the neighborhood or around town feeling like a kid again. I have been folding it up and taking it with me to different locations and then riding from there. I love it.”
Rigid Vs Suspension Fork On A Fat Bike
Theres no need for suspension on a fat bike as the large-volume tires offer plenty of comfort for the ride. Besides, suspension consumes a fair amount of energy, and the good part about having a rigid frame is that the bike keeps a better momentum compared to suspension bikes as well. Some e-Fat Bikes come equipped with front suspension, but you shouldnt worry about the momentum since the bike is powered by an electric motor.

Nakto Folding Ox Review: Ride Comfort Handling And Cockpit
Before diving into the meat of the handling I think a quick PSA on bike assembly is worth talking about.
We review several DTC e-bike brands and considering the savings for the consumer we love how it makes e-bikes affordable and opens it up to more people finding an e-bike within their budget.
However, unless youve tuned your own bikes we do recommend taking DTC bikes, such as the Nakto Folding OX we reviewed, into a local mechanic for setup. Ours arrived needing some TLC with the shifting and brakes before we were ready to hit the road. We have seasoned bike mechanics here on staff, but average consumers will want to make sure things are set up properly by a more experienced professional.
Once youve got things dialed in the ride experience is overall pretty decent. The Shimano Tourney works fairly well with shifting, and I think the gear range on this bike works pretty well.Im largely a fan of the 52T front chainring as it helps lower gearing levels feel like they have meaning .
The 60mm spring fork does okay at soaking up the impact of bumps in the road, and the spring dampened saddle will keep you at a relatively good comfort for how long youre likely to be riding.
The 20 X 4 fat tires roll decently and are capable of hitting some light dirt and sand areas with a little more sure of footing than a standard cruiser tire. The highlight for me is more in their handling on the road than the allure of taking them offroading.

Best Class Ii Folding Electric Bike 2022
One of the top folding electric bikes of the year, the Rad Power Bikes RadExpand 5 is the epitome of a great e-bike made better.
For years the RadExpands predecessor, the RadMini, was a mainstay on our list of the best electric folding bikes. The name change wasnt all that was new as Rad made some notable refinements to its peppy folding e-bike keeping what made the RadMini great, but adding welcome new features in the process.
One of those noteworthy changes is the handlebars. Since nearly all folding e-bikes dont merely fold at the frame but include the ability to fold down the handlebar as well, most manufacturers choose a funky handlepost design thats compact and flat. Rad welcomed the engineering challenge and instead fitted the RadExpand with a short stem and BMX-style handlebars that still fold down fairly simply. The handlebars make for better handling, and in our opinion, it does wonders for the aesthetic too.
Rad also swapped out the old semi-slick tires for new, beefier 4 tires that add more comfort. The bike is fully rigid, meaning there isnt a suspension fork, but the tires really help offset that when set to a lower PSI as they can soak up road vibrations, and we like that the lack of fork means the bike both weighs and costs less.
If youre in the market for one of the best class II electric folding bikes, youll be hard pressed to find better value than the RadExpand 5
Fewer But More Inconvenient Flat Tires
Fat-bike tires can go flat for a variety of reasons, but one advantage to the construction is their resistance to pinch flats: The tire sidewall is so tall that its more difficult to compress it fully and pinch the tube against the rim. Still, youre susceptible to punctures and tears from off-road and urban riding, and carrying a fat-tire tube is more inconvenient than a normal tube. If you flat on the wheel with the hub motor , youll have to unplug the motor to disconnect the wheel and change the flat. Wed recommend practicing this at home so you know how to do it on the road, and carry an extra tube, flat kit, and pump. If youre plagued by punctures where you live, consider investing in a pair of tire liners to fortify your rubber.

Fat-tire electric bikes are a dime a dozen nowadays, but which are the best?
From stable and user-friendly bike path cruisers to high powered bruisers built for hunting and heavy off-road use, e-bikes with fat tires are having a bit of a moment right now. Whatever your reason for wanting a fat tire e-bike, the Electric Bike Report staff of experts and bike geeks have tested some of the best money can buy.
Birthed from Alaskan snow and New Mexican sand, the ancestors of modern fat bikes first came about in the 90s as a means to explore in terrain unkind to your typical bicycle tire. Think mud, deep sand and soft snow. Theyve had high-points of popularity in recent years, but it wasnt until the rise of the electric bike that we saw the masses rolling around on fat tires. Motors made the heavy, relatively inefficient bikes more friendly to ride and people seem to like the big tires because they give you a feeling of confidence and stability not to mention many think they just look cool. Their popularity has exploded, and fat tires have been adopted into nearly every category of e-bike.
While this list is comprised of e-bikes that check in with no less than 3 wide tires, you can also check out our picks for the best overall electric bikes of 2022 if you want a little more variety in tire size.
Nakto Folding Ox Review: Range Test & Battery Performance
The 500W motor and 480Wh battery pairing is maybe the most notable combo of parts that tips you off that the Nakto Folding OX is an e-bike on a budget. Fans of max assist should expect less than an hour of time in the saddle with such a pairing.
Now that shouldnt be a deal-breaker though. Im always happy to dish out credit where its due, and to Naktos credit they are one of a few e-bike manufacturers that set the expectation accordingly as they list about a 22-mile range on their website .
From our testing, that claim checks out. We saw between 21-31 miles from our two different tests. Its also notable that we held decent speeds during both tests, and the ability to get from A to B in a hurry is nice. Considering most rides one looks to take on a cruiser are likely to be under 20 miles anyway Id say its an alright result.
To summarize my thoughts on the battery Ill say this: not everybody will love charging the bike after every ride, which is likely to be the case here unless youre making very short trips, but if youre a weekend bike warrior who likes to just cruise around I think itll serve you well.

Nakto Folding Ox Review: Summary / Where To Buy
So here at the end of the review of the Nakto Folding OX Ill answer the question likely on your mind: do I think this is the thousand dollar e-bike you should buy? Reviewer cop-out: it depends.
I grew fond of the way the Folding OX pulled so many different bike styles into one e-bike, and having ridden cruisers, fat tires, and folders extensively I do appreciate the taste it gives you into each of their respective worlds. Im also a fan of sheer comfort you get from an upright cruiser with highrise handlebars it nails the bombing around town feel I like for more leisurely rides but the motor can definitely let you go fast if youre looking for that too.
But as is always the case, the low price point means a few compromises are to be expected. It isnt the most convenient folder on the market, though it still could be enough to make a difference for some out there. Also, I do think this bike needs to have stopping power more on par with the speeds its capable of.
Id say the Nakto Folding OX is worth a hard look for the budget-conscious crowd who isnt expecting the world from an e-bike but would like a fun little e-bike for shorter trips.

What You Need To Know About Motors
Most folding e-bikes use a hub motor. Hub motors have a few advantages compared to the increasingly popular mid-drive motors appearing on other types of e-bikes. One of the biggest reasons theyre often used on folding e-bikes is hub motors are small and dont take up any additional real estate on the bike. Hub motors may be in the front or rear wheel front hub motors may slightly affect a bikes handling.
