Best Trailer Tire Recommendation To Replace St205/75r14 Load Range C
Question:
I have a Dutchman Aspen Trail 26ft 2 axle Travel Trailer, would like to replace all 4 tires. Right now I have AKURET HF188 Steel Radial ST205/74R14 load C on the camper………I am wondering if I could/should go to Load Range D and what tire would you recommend that would be best for me my family. Thanks
asked by: Linda
Expert Reply:
The best option we have for your trailer would be the Taskmaster part which is a ST205/75R14 like what you have in a Load Range C. Going with a higher capacity tire when not needed really won’t gain you anything, but this tire has a higher speed rating at 81 mph which is nice. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph so a higher speed rating gives you more flexibility. Also this a radial like what you have which is a superior tire construction than a bias ply.

TIRE SPECIFICATIONS:
Proper wheel selection is a very important component of your trailer gear system. When replacing your trailer tires and trailer rims it is critical that the proper size and load range be selected in order to match the load requirements of the trailer. The following characteristics are extremely important and should be thoroughly checked when replacing trailer tires.
- TIRE CONSTRUCTION TYPE – Bias Ply vs. Radial
- TIRE APPLICATION TYPE – Special Trailer vs. Passenger Car
- TIRE SIZE – % of section height / section width Refereed to as ‘Aspect Ratio’
- TIRE LOAD RANGE – Load carrying capacity and air pressure rating
- RIM SIZE – Diameter and width must match tire
- RIM BOLT CIRCLE – Diameter of bolt circle must match hub
Quite often consumers are uncertain how to read or interpret specifications on a tire side wall. This problem is compounded by the Trailer Tire Industry’s use of three different size identification systems on trailer tires. The following are examples and explanations of tire code.
- THE NUMERIC SYSTEM – mostly used on smaller trailer tires, indicates the tire section width , and the rim diameter
- THE ALPHA NUMERIC SYSTEM – common on 13″-15″ trailer tires, indicates air chamber size , the ‘Aspect Ratio’ , the rim diameter , and the load range
- THE METRIC SYSTEM – currently being phased in by trailer tire manufacturers, indicated the tire application type , the section width , the ‘Aspect Ratio’ , the construction type , and rim dia.

Q: What Size Should Boat Trailer Tires Be
The size of your boat trailer tires needs to be appropriate for the load they will carry and fit the trailer properly. If you began with the original tires used by the manufacturer, its a fairly safe bet that you can use the details from those tires to determine the correct size for your trailer. All the information needed can be found on the sidewall of the tire. If unsure of the appropriateness of the tire being replaced, check with the manufacturer for their recommended specifications.

Q: How Long Do Boat Trailer Tires Last
Trailer tires generally need to be replaced after three to five years of use. Though they may appear to have plenty of tread remaining, trailer tires first succumb to the effects of oxidation of the rubber and UV radiation from sunlight. The UV radiation causes exterior damage to the sidewalls, and oxygen from pressurized air creates unseen damage from the inside.
Q: How Do You Choose Boat Trailer Tires
To choose boat trailer tires, check the tire code provided by the manufacturer or found on the tires youre replacing. The problem for most of us is that this number and letter sequence is a bit like Egyptian hieroglyphics. To make matters worse, there is some variability in the way different companies identify their products. To help you understand, heres a breakdown of an ST205/75R14 105M tire:ST denotes the tire as being a Special Trailer tire205 the width of the tire measured in millimeters75 the height of the tire as a percentage of the tires width. In this example, the height is 75% of its width of 205mmR tire construction designated as either R or D 14 the diameter of the rim in inches105 Load index rating. This number corresponds to a maximum load weight in pounds. In this case, 105 equates to a maximum load of 2039 pounds per wheel. Sometimes you will find this marked on the sidewall as Load Range B , C, D, E, or F .M maximum speed rating for the tire in this case, M denotes a maximum safe speed of 81mph.

Radial Tires Vs Bias Tires
Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.
